Community Youth Referees (ages 11 to 14 years old) Local community coordinators are looking for junior referees to officate at their U9-U10-U11 and U12 home games. There will be NO referees assigned to games at U8 and lower (coaches act as on-field game officials). Generally, older soccer players are recruited for these paid positions. You must be two (2) years older than the age group you are refereeing. Certification as a referee is not required for games at U9-U10-U11 levels though you need a good knowledge of the rules/laws of the game as it applies to those levels. A minimum referee class 4 level is recommended for U12 games but that is up to the coordinator’s discretion. Check the “Quick Referee Guide 2008” for how the soccer rules apply for the different age group’s games. Community coordinators may check with the Referee Director for possible mini-soccer referee training clinics (a 3-4 hours session at your local facilities) to be hosted in a community near you. The community youth referee clinics are in developmental stages for 2008. Contact: EWZSA Referee Director Peter C. Wong

Referee Information - Coaches and Managers 2007 Referee Information - Coaches - U14 Community (Tier 4 and Lower) - City Wide Tier 1 - 3 All Ages - U16 Community (Tier 4 and Lower) Game Assigning - Chris Dixon will be assigning the following age groups this year. U14 Community (Tier 4 and lower) Referees ($35) and Assistant Referees ($20.00) Playing nights are Monday and Wednesday for girls and boys. We will do our best to get referees assigned to all games. Don't count on assistant referees for this age bracket. Coaches should be prepared to provide volunteers to assist with balls in and out. Volunteer assistant referees will not be paid unless they are certified referees. In the event of a no show referee for U14 community, the game is cancelled and rescheduled unless BOTH coaches can agree that a replacement can referee the game. Once this agreement is in place, a coach cannot change their mind or protest the game based on the person selected to officiate the game. The person volunteering to referee the game must put their name, address and telephone number on the game sheet to be paid for the game. City Wide (Tiers 1, 2 and 3) All age groups and U16 Community (Tier 4 and lower) Assistant Referees ($20.00) Every attempt will be made to provide assistant referees based on availability of certified officials. Assigning of assistant referees will be made in this order: In the event of a no show for city wide or U16, the game is cancelled and rescheduled unless BOTH coaches can agree to a replacement. An assistant referee can be used to referee the game, however, do not pressure a young referee into doing a game they may not be capable of handling. Assistant referees are paid for the game whether it is played or not played. They must put their names on the game sheets.
Referee Complaints All referee and assistant referee complaints must be made in writing to the Zone office and the referee director. Telephone complaints will not be accepted or responded to. Do not put complaints on game sheets. The referee director does not see the games sheets until after the tiering round is completed. Please remember that the referee's decisions on facts of play are final. These decisions include goals, fouls and misconducts. Game protests or discipline appeals go to the league NOT to the referee director.
Communications During the Season Field closure information can be obtained by calling 496-4999, Press 1 or by visiting the Field Closure web site at: http://www.edmonton.ca/If fields are closed, referees will not be at the games. If the fields are open and the weather changes, the referee determines if the game can proceed. Fields without appropriate filed markings can be reported by email or through the referee hotline. Coaches or managers are responsible for ensuring the referee assigner is aware of cancelled or rescheduled games. Referees who show for games that have been cancelled or rescheduled without the referee assignor's knowledge will be paid and the community or club will be billed for the referees.
