Update for Community Referee CoursesSpecial Information for Youth Referees 1) Changes to the Laws** EMSA has made some changes to the fouls and misconducts section of the mini rules for 8 v 8 soccer. Referees are allowed to use yellow and red cards to discipline players. Please use the cards cautiously and sparingly verbal correction and warnings should be your first option in most discipline cases. Players can still be substituted out of a game as another option. There are no penalty kicks for any fouls committed period. All free kicks awarded are direct. 2) Getting Games As a new referee it is sometimes difficult to get started. Here are some tips and hints that can help you as you start your new venture. The first point of contact for you should be your community coordinator (list available on www.edmontonwestsoccer.com ) some of the larger communities might have a person that assigns refs. If you are looking for games outside of your community you can access the other coordinators names and numbers from the above mentioned website and contact them directly. The last thing that you need to do is do a great job and soon the people will be calling you. 3) Getting Paid Each community is going to have a different system but most community refs should receive pay on the field in cash. Fees may vary slightly but should be for U10 games ($15 to $20) and for U12’s ($25). There are some AR positions available by contacting Ed Yakimowich the zone referee assignor. Ed’s email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Games done for the zone are paid by the zone. Very important that you keep accurate records of dates, times and fields of your assignments for center refs keep your copy of the game sheet in case of any mistakes. Questions and concerns about reffing can be directed to Peter Wong at 487-7099 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Small sided games are the best way for players to combine nearly all elements of the game. The fewer the players the more game-conditioned touches on the soccer ball. As well as you get all these touches in a ‘realistic’ and ‘live’ environment with the addition of tactical applications. This is where the enjoyment happens and after 60 minutes of high activity combined with structured repetition the players learn and go home HAPPY!
